Leeds navigated last season with Perri, Karl Darlow, Meslier, and Alex Cairns.
However, the roster faced major turnover heading into the summer off-season. Darlow, Meslier, and Cairns all reached the end of their contracts. While Cairns signed an extension, Meslier departed, and Darlow opted for a move to Manchester United, creating uncertainty at Elland Road.
Target Prefers German Stay
Leeds entered pre-season with only Perri and Cairns available. Perri was expected to leave after losing his starting role midway through last season, while Cairns remained a long-shot for the top spot. The dynamic shifted recently with the high-profile acquisition of James Trafford, securing a new starting goalkeeper for the club.
With Trafford established as the primary option, the 49ers turned their attention to acquiring a reliable deputy. Interest centered on Eintracht Frankfurt’s Michael Zetterer as a potential replacement for the outgoing Perri.
Reports from Absolut Fussball indicate that the 31-year-old German keeper has no desire to depart the Bundesliga this summer. Zetterer intends to stay and compete directly for the starting position at Frankfurt.
The Search for a Deputy Continues
Securing a backup goalkeeper remains a key priority for Leeds. Perri’s expected exit to Torino is progressing toward completion after earlier delays.
While Cairns featured during pre-season, the 33-year-old is not viewed as a long-term Premier League solution behind Trafford. Management now seeks an affordable or free-agent backup willing to accept a reserve role, avoiding further major expenditure after committing £40 million to secure Trafford.
