The Mexican right-back had become a firm favourite during his time in Glasgow, winning over the Celtic support with his energy, passion and committed displays. His return to the Premier League club to begin rehabilitation has prompted an emotional farewell of sorts, with Araujo sharing a biblical quote from Genesis 19:17 on his Instagram account. Translated, the verse reads: “What God left behind will never be better than what lies ahead.”
The message is open to interpretation, and Celtic supporters will understandably want to read it in the most flattering light possible.
One reading is straightforward. Araujo is simply looking forward, acknowledging the chapter at Celtic has closed and focusing on what comes next at Bournemouth. He moves on from a loan spell cut short by injury and sets his sights on recovery and his future career.
The other reading is the one Celtic fans will prefer. Taken in that direction, the verse suggests that wherever Araujo goes from here, nothing will surpass what he experienced at Celtic. The atmosphere, the supporters, the connection he built during his short time in Glasgow, perhaps nothing in the remainder of his career will replicate it.
There is some evidence to support that interpretation. Bournemouth teammate Ryan Christie, who knows exactly what it feels like to leave Parkhead for the Premier League, has spoken about Araujo being genuinely stunned by the intensity of the Celtic support, and revealed that the defender absolutely loved his time in Glasgow. That inside knowledge, paired with the nature of the biblical quote Araujo chose to share, does add weight to the idea that his departure carries a genuine touch of regret.
His late winner at Kilmarnock and the scenes that followed captured something real between the player and the support. It may not be the last chapter in that relationship.
