Willie Collum, the SFA Head of Refereeing, admitted that Celtic were denied a clear penalty in their costly 2-1 defeat to Hibs at Celtic Park last month. He described the incident as showing “clear holding and impact” and its prolonged nature, suggesting it should have been a penalty kick.
VAR has faced renewed criticism, particularly after Willie Collum’s detailed review sparked backlash from frustrated supporters. Once again, numerous talking points emerged, with our club being labelled as the victim of a questionable decision that could significantly impact the title race.
The incident in question occurred during our recent home match against Hibs when Liam Scales illegally impeded a player in the penalty area. Despite the controversy surrounding this incorrect decision, it hasn’t received much attention in the Scottish mainstream media. All the outlets are focussing on a possible red card offence committed by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain during our recent win over Motherwell.
Anyone familiar with the game knows the ex-England international’s overzealous challenge was only justified by the caution it received in real time. However, Ibrox’s fake conspiracy cry has led the SMSM to cater to the paranoid fans and use that incident as the main talking point from Collum’s Friday night confession on Sky Sports.
Incidentally, this incident occurred during a game where John Beaton missed a clear penalty kick in real time despite having a clear view. He was only forced to take action after VAR intervened.
