Keith Wyness, the former Aberdeen chief, has emphasized that there is little interest in England for Rangers and Celtic to join the Premier League.

During an episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old, who held leadership positions at Aberdeen, Everton, and Aston Villa before venturing into football consultancy for elite clubs, warned against the potential chaos that could ensue if the Old Firm were integrated into the English football landscape.

Despite ongoing discussions about the inclusion of Rangers and Celtic in the English football pyramid, various proposals have been met with resistance on both sides of the border. Recent data from UEFA’s European Club Finance and Investment report indicates robust financial performance by both Scottish giants when compared to other European clubs, with both teams ranking in the top 20 for gate revenue on the continent.

Wyness expressed skepticism about the feasibility of such a move, stating definitively, “I don’t see it happening at all.” Reflecting on his time at Aberdeen, Wyness recounted a battle to secure fairer TV revenue shares, which led to the club’s departure from the Scottish Premier League, leaving Rangers and Celtic behind.

The notion of the Old Firm relocating to England has resurfaced amid Fenerbahce’s considerations to break away from the Turkish league. However, Wyness cooled speculation by highlighting potential challenges, such as overwhelming fan presence in host cities during match weekends. He emphasized, “It would be a disaster. People underestimate the disruptions that fanbases could cause. Cities would be inundated during weekend fixtures.”

In Wyness’s view, the current regulations and lack of enthusiasm in England make the prospect of Rangers and Celtic joining the Premier League unlikely. While he doesn’t discount the possibility entirely, he concludes, “Never say never, but I really can’t see them making the move.”
